BRANDON, MB – The Brandon Bobcats needed a win to guarantee a first-round playoff series at home, but the Alberta Golden Bears had a different idea as the Bears came away with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-16) win Saturday night in Brandon.
The Bobcats loss and a Calgary Dinos win makes the two teams share identical 11-9 records, but due to the tie-breaker the Dinos have sole possession of fourth spot, meaning Calgary will host the Bobcats in Canada West quarter-final action next weekend.
The Golden Bears were led by Mitch Irvine’s match-high 16 kills. Jarron Mueller picked up 33 assists, eight digs, and four kills as well. The Golden Bears out-blocked the Bobcats 13-5.
In his final home game as a Bobcat Jon Sloane picked up 11 kills on 17 swings (.588 hitting percentage) while Sam Tuivai finished with 10 kills.
The win improves the Golden Bears record to 15-5 on the season.
