WINNIPEG, MB – The Bobcats men’s volleyball team dropped their second match of the season to the University of Manitoba Bisons 3-1 (25-21, 25-11, 25-27, 25-19). The loss gives the Bobcats a 0-2 record to start the season, not the place they want to be after the first week of the Canada West regular season.
“We certainly saw somethings we need to work on and build from,” says Grant Wilson, acting head coach for the Bobcats. “Our attack efficiency needs to be quite a bit better and our blocking needs to be quite a bit better. We will work a lot on those two things in the week ahead and get ready for Winnipeg [next weekend].”
The Bobcats struggled out of the gate before an impressive third set that was highlighted by an emphatic block by Garrett Popplestone, Jon Sloane, and Brendan White that gave the Bobcats a 27-25 win. The ‘Cats couldn’t maintain the momentum however, dropping the fourth set and the match.
Leading the offensive attack for the Bobcats was Ben Glue. In just his second match in CIS competition, Glue notched 17 kills, averaging 15.5 kills per match over the weekend. Popplestone finished with 34 assists and 10 digs while Scott Neufeld finished with a team-high 11 kills.
The Bobcats will travel back to Winnipeg on Thursday to play the U of W Wesmen before returning home for the home Bobcats regular season home opener on Friday. Game time is 8:00 pm at the BU Gymnasium.
